Stripe Dispute & Chargeback Reason Codes

When a Stripe dispute is filed, it is mapped to a card network reason code. Use this reference directory to understand what each card network requires to win on representment.

Visa Reason Codes

Visa 13.1: Services Not Received

This is the most common reason code for B2B SaaS and agency chargebacks. It is triggered when the cardholder claims they paid for a service, but the merchant failed to deliver the service, or the service was not rendered by the agreed-upon date.

Visa 13.2: Cancelled or Unresolved Recurring Transaction

This code applies when a cardholder claims they cancelled their subscription or recurring billing service, but the merchant continued to charge their card without authorization.

Visa 13.3: Not as Described or Defective

This code is used when the customer claims the service they received was completely different from what was agreed upon, or did not match the quality promised.

Visa 10.4: Card-Absent Fraud

This dispute code is raised when the cardholder claims they did not authorize the transaction and their card was used fraudulently online.

Visa 12.6: Duplicate Processing

This code is used when a cardholder claims a single transaction was processed more than once, resulting in multiple charges for the same service or product.

Visa 13.6: Credit Not Processed

Triggered when a cardholder claims they cancelled a service or returned a product, and the merchant agreed to a refund but never processed it.

Mastercard Reason Codes

Mastercard 4853: Services Not Provided

Mastercard equivalent of Visa 13.1. It is raised when the cardholder claims the merchant did not perform the services or failed to make the platform available.

Mastercard 4837: Card-Absent Fraud

Mastercard code for unauthorized online transactions. The cardholder claims they have no knowledge of the purchase.

Mastercard 4834: Point of Interaction Error

This broad Mastercard code covers situations where the cardholder claims they were charged the wrong amount or charged multiple times for the same transaction (paid twice via different or the same payment form).

American Express Reason Codes

Amex Services Not Received

American Express code for disputes where services were not rendered. Amex reviewer standards are notoriously high and require clean documentation.
